How to “Play Games”​ at work?

All of us have played some kind of video games before. Most of us enjoyed ourselves in the process, got addicted for a while, and got better in skills overtime. Work can be the same if applying the correct method and mentality.

  1. There are multiple reinforcing feedback loops in games. For instance, experience is enhanced by sound, video or action feedback. Missing any part of it could easily lose someone’s interest. [comments: work is more interesting with meaningful feedbacks]
  2. There are achievable and bounded rewards in games. A big level is broken down to small levels in games. Each reward is either for a special purpose or limited time at each level. [comments: work in general should be broken down to small goals, and limited reward is also needed to stay in the game. Note ‘reward’ can be either mental or physical, like reading 20 printed out pages everyday will reward one better psychologically than using a bookmark]
  3. Most of the successful games do not use punishments. Thus, do not suggest negative feedback loops. [comments: for both employer and employees, criticism should only be used as specific as possible; rather than generalizing it to an entire skill]
  4. Online games are more attracted because player interactions. But online games can also be destroyed by player interactions. [comments: relationship is key]
